View from Carib Territory After running around Cabrit's for a few hours, we headed east around the top of the island to get to the Emerald Pool. On the way, we stopped in Carib Territory, which is kind of like our indian reservations. The Caribs were the original inhabitants of the Caribbean islands (hence the name) when the Europeans arrived. When their numbers had been reduced by wars and disease, those who survived were sent to live on Dominica. I wish I had a picture of some Caribs, they're really very beautiful people. At first I thought that they looked asian, almost Polynesian, but the more I visit Carib territory the more I see that they look like South American Indians, which would make sense. |
The Emerald Pool This was an incredible sight and I know that pictures won't do it justice. The rain forest around the pool is thick, impenetrable, and tall. Moss coats everything, you can smell the moisture and can very nearly hear everything growing. Almost turned tree hugger over the sight. I'll just let the pictures do the talking here, because my words would just get in the way. |
Trafalgar Falls This is a set of 3 falls located near Roseau, the capital of Dominica. There's a "mama fall" a "papa fall" and a "baby fall", according to the local tour guide. The "mama fall" has the most water because a large portion of the "papa fall" is used to run the hydroelectric power plant. These two pictures are of the "mama fall", and so is the picture on my welcome page that you clicked to enter this site. |

Here's Matt for the final time.... Here we are at the base of Trafalgar. The man pointing towards the camera was our very unofficial tour guide. He was quite drunk, arrived after we did, then demanded money for "showing us around". We hadn't asked for him and were doing just fine without him. Welcome to the world of ripping off tourists. |

Well, there's the trip. Most of these pictures are from Christian who took them on his digital camera and was kind enough to let me copy them.
